Sooo disappointing. TW is one of my favorite authors, so how can he defend GB’s intellect? GB’s favorite book was something about a worm, written when he was already “growed up.” GB was not altogether an idiot, he probably has average IQ, but who ever doesn’t think he was puppet mastered by Cheney is either stupid or ideologically blinded by Republicanism. For shame TW. But I do look forward to you next book. Unless its about politics. Hey, we all have weaknesses…

I like Tom Wolfe, and I especially like President G.W. Bush. Interesting segment!

  • MarcusCMarcellus says:

Wolfe – good writer, terrible political thinker.

You’re in waaay over your head here, aren’t you…

  • BoyGenteel says:

Nope. I watch various outlets. Do you?

  • teemuruskeepaa says:

I think you have no right to make me appear sad. It is wrong and proves you are wrong.

  • historywillabsolve says:

at least the Obama supporters can claim they were young and naive some time in the future. what’s your excuse BoyGenteel? were you watching nothing but Fox News the past 8 years?

  • BoyGenteel says:

I’m only slightly older than the twentysomething tools who get all their news from MSNBC and Comedy Central, with “Yes, We Can!” stickers all over their Subarus.

  • historywillabsolve says:

i’m not deluded, tom wolfe is just an old fool. like you.

  • BoyGenteel says:

Your anti-Bush attack fell apart when confronted with facts, and now you’re whimpering away with “I don’t want to talk politics with you”? Sad.

  • BoyGenteel says:

Fortunately, hwa, deluded people such as yourself won’t be writing the history books.

  • burlearth says:

No one “won” you fool, except for the private interests who tried to turn Russia into a capitalist economy overnight and made it even worse. Russia collapsed through it’s own flawed inner structure. No other country had influence over that.

  • EasyEs says:

Shut it Euro trash it sure as hell wasn’t you guys who won it..

  • newfrontiers says:

Eisenhower was the Supreme Allied Commander in WWII. He was heavily involved in the planning and execution of D-Day- the massive Allied offensive that finally broke Germany’s resistance. And Reagan’s massive increases in military spending, combined with his outreach to America’s allies, forced the Soviet Union into a death spiral from which it could never recover. Both men were and remain great patriots and great leaders.

  • burlearth says:

Reagan won the cold war? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH, what naive arrogance.

  • eusurfer says:

did i hear this guy right. what a prick. eisenhower didnt win WWII. hitler bit of more than he could che, and reagan didnt win the cold war, the soviet system collapsed under its own inefficient oppresive weight weight. t wolfe is an ass licker to the ruling classes. he should be called do and not wolfe cause thats what he is, a lap dog

  • grendeljack says:

Reagan accelerated the demise of the old guard and made Gorbachev’s reforms the only viable option. Oh and as for ‘w/out major conflict’ the breakup of Yugoslavia led to the Serb-Croat War. Ring a bell? 4 years of hell on earth. Saw it first hand. Openness and Democracy WAS NOT THERE. Merely the absence of a controlling USSR. War crimes like that only happen when folks have been told all their lives that “It’s okay, they’re not really human, you can kill, rape and torture as many as you want.”

  • TheYellowTelevision says:

The USSR was doomed from the begining economically. Reagan just happened to be spewing out rhetoric about bringing down the Soviets as a reformer was stepping in as leader of the USSR (Gorbachev). Gorbachev was the one that allowed for the Eastern Bloc to dissolve without major conflict. He’s the one who brought openess and increased democratic and capitalistic practises into the country. Fuck Reagan.

  • allaboutdmagic says:

And it certainly didn’t end Communism in Asia, either. Come on, Wolfy! Be honest.

  • grendeljack says:

Reagan dragged the USSR into a spending war which was simply a downright street-smart thing to do….pitting a surplus capitalist based economy against a faltering subsistence socialist economy and the winner is….McDonalds in Moscow.

  • subsamadhi says:

This is how you know that Tom Wolfe is a joke. Give me Thomas Wolfe any day of the week over this clown.

  • hannahenyap says:

Man I’ll have to give that a read, thanks Marcus.
Baurdillard had an interesting theory on why communism collapsed, he thought it was because globally our notions of either a capitalist/Communist utopias collapsed.

  • marcusbondi says:

Hi Whipit = Read Gorby’s autobiography – he concedes that Reagan’s skillful brinksmanship confounded and broke teh USSR. Cheers.
