As to the Lisbon treaty tweaking – I think it is reassuring. The chiefs in Europe had to listen to Irish concerns and in the end had to address them. Ireland did Europe a favour by reminding its citizens of the power of democracy and the voice of the people.

The EU leadership disgusts me. They are not accountable in the least and they have been threatening Ireland because we dared to ratify one of their treaties. (We were the only country with a constitutional requirement to have a referendum on the treaty – in other countries, the political classes voted and the people were denied the right to vote) Now the EU is threatening to leave Ireland out of the union and saying we owe them because of the aid we got when Ireland was poor. It’s perplexing.
